A Small Story: An Empty Afternoon
That afternoon, I was wearing a thick coat, and I felt a bit hot, so I took it off and casually (carelessly) tied up my hair.
I sat on the sofa, pulling at the strap, feeling a little bored, so I picked up my phone (without thinking) to see what my friends had posted.
I was just about to take out the trash when my phone suddenly rang.
I thought it was a close friend messaging me, and I felt a bit excited for a moment.
But when I opened it (to take a quick look), it was only an advertisement.
Besides, I noticed a group chat discussing an activity I don’t really like.
I read a few lines and felt a bit disappointed, so I decided to leave the group.
Unexpectedly, right after I left, my friend messaged me.
She said, “Why did you go? We were just about to ask for your opinion.”
I hesitated, because I knew that once I replied, they would bring the topic back to that activity again, and I really wanted to turn it down.
I stared at my phone, and my heart suddenly felt empty, with a touch of sadness.
(Actually) It wasn’t that I didn’t want to talk to my friends;
I just hoped they could understand how I felt.
